Let me get back to you

Diary of a Programmer Part 4
(part 1, part 2, part 3)

A common lie by prospects.

You know, the most common lie we all make is to agree that we read the terms and conditions, whenever we are in the digital realm. The next common lie we either get (or use on others) is “Let me get back to you”.

And as a programmer, I know this just too well.

In my early years as a programmer, I actually believed them! So, I even wrote in my organizer that so-and-so will get back.

But over the years, I got wiser and realised that the above statement is just a nicer way of saying “nah, I think I don’t want your service”. Which is good as well. A nice-person’s way of rejecting someone. For that, credit is due.

But on the receiving end, that’s just yet another rejection for me.

Well, life goes on, right?

But anyway, from the business perspective, it’s a numbers game. If a 100 prospects say that they’ll get back to me, to be fair, a small percentage, like 2%, DO get back to me. Some have moved on to become my long-term clients.

So, my point of this article is: my fellow programmers (and also other business owners). I share your feelings when you hear such a response from prospects. I’ve learned to detach the dejection feeling from any rejection response. Just think of it as a numbers game, and keep doing your good work.

There is no business expert out there who will convert all 100 prospects to clients. So, brothers (and sisters), let’s cheer up and move on, with our lives and businesses.
